Making Technical Expertise Accessible

Design, planning and other building industry knowledge is critical for communities and community-based organizations as they consider future growth and development to meet their needs.  Too often, however, a lack of financial resources makes it difficult for community groups to access this knowledge when it is needed.  CDRC-Boston works through its network of pro bono professional volunteers to make technical expertise about the built environment available to build better communities around Greater Boston.

We work with public agencies, community-based non-profits and other organized community groups in the early stages of design and planning.  This allows communities to take advantage of professional knowledge before making key decisions that will determine the outcome of a project.  Early expertise also prepares community members to become more informed consumers of professional services in later project stages, armed with the knowledge and language that will enable them to fully participate in decisions about projects that affect the community or organization.

CDRC-Boston is able to assist a wide variety of clients on many different project types because of our multi-disciplinary volunteer network.  We also connect to pro bono resources in other fields, recognizing that design and planning expertise is only one aspect of responding to community challenges and opportunities.  Finally, CDRC-Boston monitors, documents and evaluates the project experiences with our clients and volunteers, so that learning for every project can be used to build knowledge about community design practice across our region.
