| Chelsea Neighborhood Developers Façade Redesign Competition Winner Announced Chelsea Neighborhood Developers (CND) partnered with the Chelsea Artists’ Collaborative (CHARCOLL) in hosting an “Art & Architecture in Chelsea,” on October 21, 2009 at CND's office. The event highlighted 14 submissions to a design competition co-coordinated by CND and their architect for foreclosed housing renovation projects, Randy Johnson of Horne + Johnson/StepONE, and Erik Miller of the Community Design Resource Center of Boston (CDRC). Submitters were asked to design an innovative and fresh look for the façade of a post-foreclosure three-family home recently acquired by CND as a part of its community stabilization efforts. The winning design, submitted by Robert Burnham principal architect of Nine Industries Architecture, is currently being implemented on the building. The judges of the competition included Chelsea residents, a CND board member, a senior City of Chelsea official, and several architects familiar with the neighborhood. The submissions were judged on their creativity and responsiveness to the community redevelopment context, the incorporation of sustainable building materials, and creating maximum impact within a limited budget. The judges solicited input from the community before selecting the final winner. Members of CHARCOLL participated in the informal event with an exhibit featuring work portraying architecture in Chelsea by local artists Deb Hickey and Richard Pawlak. CND sends out a special thanks to all the participants of the design competition! You can download all the designs from CND’s website, www.chelseand.org.
